Hire a 2WD in Tasmania unless your pins are on Parks-declared 4WD tracks — and even then, read the contract before you enjoy the brochure. Heritage carhire.htm and /car-hire/ 301 or stay here as planning, not as a desk that can hold a compact at Hobart Airport.
Why a car is the default
Public coaches and day tours cover famous radials from Hobart. They do not cover a change of mind at Bay of Fires when the wind drops. Self-drive is how the itineraries work. Distances look small. Fatigue does not.
2WD versus 4WD hire
Sealed circuits — Freycinet, Bruny via ferry (check whether your hire allows the ferry), Tasman Peninsula, Midland Highway, Queenstown–Strahan bitumen — are 2WD country in ordinary weather. Ice and flood still close roads.
4WD hire is a different product and often a different insurance story. Beaches, Arthur-Pieman tracks and clay forestry spurs are commonly excluded. A vehicle that can physically go there can still be a breach.
The old ARB.htm accessory page 301s to the 4WD essay. Accessories are not permission.
Airport, ferry, one-way
Hobart and Launceston are the usual pick-up cities. Devonport matters if you arrive on the Spirit of Tasmania with no car — or with one. One-way hires between north and south exist and change seasonally; we will not quote them. If you fly into Hobart and out of Launceston, say so before you assume a free drop.
Driving habits that are the real extra fee
- Dusk wildlife on the east and in valleys.
- Logging traffic and single-lane moments.
- Highland shade-ice in shoulder seasons.
- Fuel in the west: do not assume a late bowser.
Book-travel language
The heritage book-travel page is not a reservations engine. Neither is this one. Compare current hire terms on the company you actually pay. If a clause is unclear, that is a question for them, not for an editorial inbox that cannot see your contract.
