The traditional way to get to Port Arthur from Hobart is to drive. There is another way – take a cruise – and if you’ve never done it, believe me you are missing out on a treat. Leave the car at home – if you have a hire car, save yourself a day’s car hire and put it towards the cost of a cruise ticket – sit back and let someone else do the driving, and on the way take in the fabulous seascapes of the south-east corner of Tasmania that even the locals don’t often get to see.

The cruise begins at the Brooke Street Pier in downtown Hobart and heads south down the Derwent Estuary past Hobart’s riverside suburbs towards Bruny Island. After passing the iconic Iron Pot Lighthouse, the cruiser changes course, crossing Storm Bay towards Cape Raoul, which is one of the most scenic of Tasmanian’s many rocky headlands. Rounding the cape, the cruiser then follows the coast up to Port Arthur, travelling alongside some of the highest cliffs in the southern hemisphere along a coastline that is one of the most dramatic and scenic in the whole of Australia. Along the way there is a good chance you’ll catch a glimpse of the local wildlife.

Your cruise ticket includes entry to the port Arthur Historic Site and a walking tour, so upon arrival you are free to explore this World Heritage Listed place at your leisure. If you purchased a Premium cruise ticket, morning tea, lunch, harbour cruise, walking tour, guided Isle of the Dead Tour at Port Arthur is included.

Ample time is allocated for you to take in all that Port Arthur has to offer before boarding a coach for the return journey to Hobart.

Cruises operate from October to May every Sunday, Wednesday & Friday, departing from Brooke Street Pier, Sullivans Cove, Hobart at 8.15am. The coach from Port Arthur arrives back in Hobart at 4pm. Packages start from $159.00. As one might expect, this is a very popular, value-packed cruise so advance booking is essential, especially if you are a visitor to Hobart with a tight schedule – and if that you, this cruise is a must as it includes a harbour/estuary and coastal cruise, a visit to Port Arthur and a drive through the countryside all in a single day.
