Brookfield Margate could be described as a family friendly spacious restaurant/cafe, situated in a retro decorated heritage shed in Margate south of Hobart, but in reality it is so much more.
Brookfield is full of interesting corners full of memorabilia. The One Stop Shop is a collectors delight, with everything from music nic nacs, souvenirs, gift vouchers and wonderful gifts ideas too numerous to mention. Head upstairs and you are in another world again! First there’s the delightful Tudor Court Model Village, created in 1957 by John Palotta, a Polio sufferer who only had use of three fingers on one hand. The Village is made from match sticks, wire and dental plaster and is amazingly well built and authentic. It took John 11 years to build and is comprised of replicas of over 40 buildings in Kent and Chillam.
Then there’s German Model Train World, built by Eric Sablowski for the train enthusiasts. It’s a wonderful replica German Village complete with tunnels, mountains, fair grounds. A Vintage Clothing display is housed also on the mezzanine floor.
To see the delights of the mezzanine and first floors, there are five guided tours daily which include the story of the Heritage Listed Brookfield Building, a trip around an English Village, and the trains working day and night light. Discover the life of early England, stories of poachers, archers, and gypsies. Each tour takes about 35 minutes leaving you time to relax and enjoy some food at the retro cafe in the heritage listed Brookfield Shed.
Tours times: 10.00, 11.00, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm.

We travelled via the Southern Outlet. Stopped at Mount Nelson then via Longley, Dru Point Park and Margate stopping at the Brookfield Shed. It has been extensively renovated and is now a popular venue. Upstairs houses the model Tudor Village complex. This miniature version of Old England was created in 1957 by John Palotta, a polio suffered with movement in only one hand. It is built from dental plaster, matchsticks and wire. Amazing.
The gift shop had a tempting display of goodies on offer. Dot.
